Concerns about events of possible hazard to humans, animals and land around the La Porte County area. These concerns are being or need to be investigated. Any input is welcome. Mid West - LaPorte DROUGHT conditions

LPETAG, in cooperation with La Porte County Household Hazardous Waste and IDEM, has started a county wide program collecting replaced mercury switched household thermostats.

The current plan is for LPETAG to collect thermostats from heating contractors the transport them to a recycling facility. The facility will then package them for shipping and send the old stats off to the National Mercury Recycling facility.

All of the heating contractors so far contacted in La Porte County have agreed to participate. By keeping this Mercury out of landfills and recycling it will reduce the chances of our children being susceptible to Nervous System conditions later in life.

The local collection project is 90% funded by LPETAG.

Mercury and other Heavy Metals.

Thanks to the Indiana Air Board IDEM is now persuing a very tight rule to lower the output of mercury to the environment.

Many people have had illness that had unknown causes and potential instigated by mercury poisoning.

I tried to speak at the Air Board Meeting July 7, 2004. It was a bit too emotionaly overbearing. I tried and tried to stay composed. The board was very gracious. I was able to get a few salient points across.

Thanks to Mr. Marlow Harmon and Mr. Walker (Chair of the Air Board) for their consideration and promoting IDEM to get this rule through.

This is a very personal matter to me. My Mother, her brother and sister all died from conditions that were most likely caused by mercury or other heavy metal toxins.

I hear all the time around La Porte about concentrated areas of cancer cases and other maladies. Here and now is a great chance to write letters and inform State and Federal Agencies your feelings. EPA has already gotten about 600,000 letters from around the United States.

So please spend 74 cents and write a letter with your concerns about Mercury contamination in your environment.
